Learn, study, explore, and expand your inner practice horizons with confidence. Share your experience among friends in yoga. This monthly class is a launch and sustaining platform for continuous practice and study of the eight “petals” of astanga yoga in the Iyengar tradition. Sessions include asana themes, threads, and approaches to more complex asana; preparatory and primary pranayama; and yoga philosophy discussion with practical application to your life and practice.
January - In Light on Life, B.K.S. Iyengar writes, “...in Savasana you are on the edge of a great mystery…”. With our intention to establish daily practices, we will explore the surface of Savasana from above surface approaches to states below. In preparation, you are encouraged to read Savasana (The Art of Relaxation) in Light on Pranayama, Savasana and Time in Chapter 7 of Light on Life, and The Art of Relaxation in Iyengar His Life and Work.
Recommendations: a curiosity to learn and three years of study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT).

1-2pm (Pacific)
Community donation optional — 100% of donations go to a fund to support financially challenged students continue learning of Iyengar Yoga.
These informal gatherings to explore the Yoga Sutras will look to the gems of practical wisdom in B.K.S. Iyengar's translation and commentary, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Other publications by the Iyengars and translations are sometimes woven in. Each gathering will offer a mix of lecture, inquiry, basic pronunciation, chanting, perplexity, and clarity.
January - “The quality of intelligence is inherent but dormant, so our first step must be to awaken it.” – B.K.S. Iyengar. Let’s begin the new year with the intention to establish daily practices. In preparation for our January session, please peruse Yoga Sutras 1.1 - 1.22. When we meet, we will discuss general concepts encapsulated in these sutras with a deeper look at the vrttis, fluctuations of consciousness. We will also explore ways to begin a daily practice of chanting and how exploring the connection of words, their sound, and meaning can help fortify memory.
Or, just come and enjoy the community of others. Learn and simply “be" without worrying about being prepared or having done anything at all special besides living your life and showing up.
Community donation optional — Register for free to receive the meeting link. Email me for donation options.
“Our sadhana consists of a process of dynamic and progressive efforts, through the various aspects of asthanga yoga, until we reach samadhi, the effortless state which is the mark of a stable intelligence (sthitaprajna)."

EQUANIMITY
Our first dip into yoga begins with the body. As we become more sensitive, we refine outer shapes and open inner spaces. Perception seeps inward from what can be seen to what can only be felt. The mind becomes absorbed and the asana begins to blossom. Over the course of this workshop, we will explore equanimity – from body considerations of gravity, direction, extension and expansion to breath and mind considerations that can enrich our experience in the moment and, importantly, provide buoyancy in life. We will study how breath awareness in asana prepares us for pranayama, and how pranayama, in turn, supports and complements our asana practice. There will be plenty of time for questions, reflection, and sharing among friends in our community. Join us.

TOPIC TBD
INTERLINKED AND INTERWOVEN
B.K.S. Iyengar writes, “All the eight petals of yoga are interlinked and interwoven. If one petal is explicit others are implicit and that is how yoga works.” With this insight as inspiration, we will study the interconnectedness of āsana, prānāyāma, and dhārana. Mornings, we will explore different modes of practice in foundational āsanas, deeper threads to more complex āsanas, and how taking the mind inside opens the consciousness. Afternoons will include philosophy discussion, āsana, and prānāyāma.
