Winter Series

Continuing Studies

Feb 1, Mar 1, Mar 29

Online Sundays
10am-12:30pm (Pacific)

Learn, study, explore, and expand your inner practice horizons with confidence. Share your experience among friends in yoga. This monthly class is a launch and sustaining platform for continuous practice and study of the eight “petals” of astanga yoga in the Iyengar tradition. Sessions include asana themes, threads, and approaches to more complex asana; preparatory and primary pranayama; and yoga philosophy discussion with practical application to your life and practice.

February - “When the action is done properly, this ‘done’ action will imprint in the brain. Otherwise, only the memory of the verbal instructions will leave an imprint; for example, we remember only: ‘Geeta has said the leg has to be turned.’ The imprint we want is for the leg region itself to send the message: ‘ I have done it’.”  –Geeta S. Iyengar. With Geetaji’s words above as inspiration, we will explore actions and responses from different perspectives to transform the postural shape into an asana that lives.

Recommendations: a curiosity to learn and three years of study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT).

Yoga Sutra Study Group

Jan 30, Feb 27, Mar 27

Online Fridays
1-2pm (Pacific)

Community donation optional — 100% of donations go to a fund to support financially challenged students continue learning of Iyengar Yoga.

These informal gatherings to explore the Yoga Sutras will look to the gems of practical wisdom in B.K.S. Iyengar's translation and commentary, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Other publications by the Iyengars and translations are sometimes woven in. Each gathering will offer a mix of lecture, inquiry, basic pronunciation, chanting, perplexity, and clarity.

February - Patanjali organizes modifications of consciousness into five general categories. Studying the modifications in combination with yoga practices is a means to know ourselves in relationship to what is and what could be, and to other beings in the world. “Consciousness sees objects in relation to its own idiosyncrasies, creating fluctuations and modifications in one’s thoughts. These modifications, of which there are five… may be visible or hidden, painful or not, distressing or pleasing, cognizable or non-cognizable.” - B.K.S. Iyengar. If you wish to prepare, read Light on Yoga Sutras 1.5-1.11.

Or, just come and enjoy the community of others. Learn and simply “be" without worrying about being prepared or having done anything at all special besides living your life and showing up.

Community donation optional — Register for free to receive the meeting link. Email me for donation options.

“Our sadhana consists of a process of dynamic and progressive efforts, through the various aspects of asthanga yoga, until we reach samadhi, the effortless state which is the mark of a stable intelligence (sthitaprajna)."

Exploration of Asana

”We are missing the gold if we do asanas as a physical practice only.” - Geeta S. Iyengar

Our focus will be on Exploration of Asana. With Geetaji’s quote as our guide, we will explore asana in the context of the 8-petals of yoga, how a more wholistic approach can reveal asana as a residence, and how a multi-day focus can be a refuge.

Learn in community with yoga friends. We begin Friday morning and finish Sunday morning. Full days include asana, pranayama, yoga sutras, discussion, and ample time for questions, sharing and discussion.

Friday - Saturday (Pacific Time)
7-7:30am Led Pranayama
9-11:30am Asana
4-6pm Philosophy / Asana / Pranayama

Sunday
7-7:30am Led Pranayama

EQUANIMITY
Our first dip into yoga begins with the body. As we become more sensitive, we refine outer shapes and open inner spaces. Perception seeps inward from what can be seen to what can only be felt. The mind becomes absorbed and the asana begins to blossom. Over the course of this workshop, we will explore equanimity – from body considerations of gravity, direction, extension and expansion to breath and mind considerations that can enrich our experience in the moment and, importantly, provide buoyancy in life. We will study how breath awareness in asana prepares us for pranayama, and how pranayama, in turn, supports and complements our asana practice. There will be plenty of time for questions, reflection, and sharing among friends in our community. Join us.

TOPIC TBD

INTERLINKED AND INTERWOVEN
B.K.S. Iyengar writes, “All the eight petals of yoga are interlinked and interwoven. If one petal is explicit others are implicit and that is how yoga works.” With this insight as inspiration, we will study the interconnectedness of āsana, prānāyāma, and dhārana. Mornings, we will explore different modes of practice in foundational āsanas, deeper threads to more complex āsanas, and how taking the mind inside opens the consciousness. Afternoons will include philosophy discussion, āsana, and prānāyāma.
