Autumn Series

Continuing Studies

Oct 12, Nov 16, Dec 14

Online Sundays
10am-12:30pm (Pacific)

Learn, study, explore, and expand your inner practice horizons with confidence. Share your experience among friends in yoga. This monthly class is a launch and sustaining platform for continuous practice and study of the eight “petals” of astanga yoga in the Iyengar tradition. Sessions include asana themes, threads, and approaches to more complex asana; preparatory and primary pranayama; and yoga philosophy discussion with practical application to your life and practice.

For December, we will study and explore the teachings of B.K.S. Iyengar through a “practice lens”, by continuing our reading from Youth’s Inquisitive Interest in Yoga; wherein answers to questions about the connection of practice and philosophy offer practical and profound insights for practice. The reading can be found in Volume 8 of AstaDala YogaMala. Our focus will be upon p.124-133, from the section beginning with, “Q - How does one deal with the esoteric…” to “Q - You have spoken about…”

Recommendations: a curiosity to learn and three years of study with a Certified Iyengar Yoga Teacher (CIYT).

These informal gatherings to explore the Yoga Sutras will look to the gems of practical wisdom in B.K.S. Iyengar's translation and commentary, Light on the Yoga Sutras of Patanjali. Other publications by the Iyengars and translations are sometimes woven in. Each gathering will offer a mix of lecture, inquiry, basic pronunciation, chanting, perplexity, and clarity.

For December, in contrast to last month, another way to learn about the yoga sutras and how they are relevant to our practice and life is to first study the sutras, then study how B.K.S. Iyengar referenced them in his teachings. Before we meet, read yoga sutras 2.46-48, 3.40, 3.31, 3.41-43, 3.45. During our session, we will have a close reading of Youth’s Inquisitive Interest in Yoga through a “yoga sutras” lens. This same article will be explored through a “practice” lens in the Continuing Studies session, Sunday December 14th. Please join us for one or both sessions to learn and share in this unique examination of theory and practice. The reading can be found in Volume 8 of AstaDala YogaMala. Our focus will be upon p.124-132, from “Q - Can you tell us now about the feel…”. up to “Q - You have spoken about…”.

Or, just come and enjoy the community of others. Learn and simply “be" without worrying about being prepared or having done anything at all special besides living your life and showing up.

Community donation optional — Register for free to receive the meeting link. Email me for donation options.

Workshops

INTERLINKED AND INTERWOVEN
B.K.S. Iyengar writes, “All the eight petals of yoga are interlinked and interwoven. If one petal is explicit others are implicit and that is how yoga works.” With this insight as inspiration, we will study the interconnectedness of āsana, prānāyāma, and dhārana. Mornings, we will explore different modes of practice in foundational āsanas, deeper threads to more complex āsanas, and how taking the mind inside opens the consciousness. Afternoons will include philosophy discussion, āsana, and prānāyāma.

EQUANIMITY
Our first dip into yoga begins with the body. As we become more sensitive, more in tune, we can refine outer shapes and open inner spaces. Perception seeps inward from that which is seen to the subtle that can only be felt. Here, the asana begins to blossom. Over the course of this workshop, we will explore equanimity, from body considerations of gravity, direction, extension and expansion to breath and mind considerations that can enrich our experience in the moment and, importantly, provide buoyancy in life. We will study how breath awareness in asana prepares for pranayama, and how pranayama complements asana. There will be plenty of time for questions and sharing amongst friends in the community.
